Stress at Work
If you’re like most of us, you want to feel healthier, to live longer, to look fantastic, and to do it all without being constantly stressed.
Work itself can often be very stressful, especially if you have deadlines, customers to please, and tough co-workers. Even more so, if you are working from home while also helping your children with online schooling. But there are many steps that you can take to ensure that you handle the work day as best you can!
A Good Start
You’ve heard it before but it bears repeating. Starting off your day with breakfast is absolutely crucial! And no, it doesn’t mean just that quick cup of coffee. Eating a healthy breakfast and planning your morning to allow enough time for all of the craziness that can happen in the morning and during the day will allow you to be more relaxed at the start of your workday. In addition, if you are working from home and your children are participating in online schooling it is helpful to prepare lunch before the day starts.
Clear Expectations
This is often overlooked. If you aren’t always sure what is expected of you or aren’t clear with your own limitations or exceptions, this can lead to unnecessary stress. Just take a few minutes to chat with your co-workers, boss, or employees and make sure that everyone is clear on their expectations.
Avoid Conflicts
Easier said than done, right! But it is really important to try to deal with conflict properly. Some conflicts of interest can cause tension in the workplace. Therefore it is best to avoid gossip and in many cases religion or politics as they are often hot topics for some people and can lead to strife.
Organization
Organize everything! That may sound like a lot of work, but statistics show that working in an organized and pleasing environment leads to more productivity and less stress. Choose colors and items that make you happy in your space and inspire you. Add a plant or two. But keep it neat and organized.
Comfort
Another often overlooked item on this list. It goes without saying that you should try to wear clothing that you are comfortable in at work. Sometimes the required work attire allows for it, sometimes it doesn’t. Also in this category, is furniture, or more specifically, your work chair. How comfortable do you feel while sitting for long periods of time? If you are standing all the time at work, are your shoes appropriate for that? Is there a cushioned mat you can stand on to improve your foot strain?
Exercise
Find time during your workday to squeeze in a little exercise. At lunch, walk around a little after you eat. Try a standing desk or make sure to get up every hour and move around a bit if you sit at your desk all day.
Music
If you are able, listen to music while at work. Not to the point of disrupting the work flow or your coworkers but music often helps to improve productivity and mood and reduces stress. If you can’t listen to music at work, listen to music before & after work!
